I Am Too Old For This Shit

I’m even more old for this shit…:)

Van Gogh and I

La Bohème, la vie d’artiste, for the moment I will set that aside. As you can read in my title, I really am too old for this shit… 20 years older than Vincent at the moment of his death. I’ve tried and will still try to go on and finish what I can, I know this is just a phase and maybe, one day, if I’ll live, the nostalgia of an artist life, the urge to draw and to paint could come back with a vengeance. But for now, I will just stay (literally) on my arse 8 h per day, helping clients of Chatr to Talk Happy… It will pay the bills…

What can I do? No Mecena offered to do for me what Theo did for Vincent or Ambroise Vollard for Gauguin…

Painting, art, literature, will still be with me and I’ll even try to write a blog…

Army Stuff and More

My mother died recently, at 87. I’m staying with my father now, trying to make his life easier, in my old hometown of Sibiu, Translyvania.

Going through old books and photos I’ve found a 37 year old sketchbook with my drawings from the army. I was a regular soldier for 18 months in Lugoj, Banat. A nice little town I liked very much since a lot of things were just like in Sibiu. I didn’t liked the army but I loved my time in Lugoj, in the spare moments…

To my surprise, almost all the drawings are portraits, some quite good, all interesting, for me, the present day me. I kept a journal and it seems that doing portraits was one of my main interests then as it is now… Danu the Portrayer… I forgot, truly, that my “vocation” , my interest in portraying humans, was so old… I shouldn’t be that surprised but I was, and pleasantly surprised… It seems I’m capable of some perseverence and coherence, after all…

Here are some of this drawings, starting with some self portraits.

Here are some other portraits, usually army friends, sergeants or such…

In fact, in the last few months of my service, there was almost a kind of a vie de bohème, our political officer forming a group of “artists” (myself  being one of them and the host, I was also the librarian of the unit). We did only drawing and painting for the last 2-3 months, painting all kind of kitsch stuff for the officers and a different kind of kitsch (political) for the “Cantarea Romaniei” (a patriotical-political artistical contest, very specific for the communist times)… We slept there, some on old piles of newspapers, some in huge baskets like the one in which my friend Dascalescu slept (and I draw him)…

My drawing skills weren’t so bad 37 years ago, were they…

Going to the Market…

Sherbrooke has a charming little train station… some freight train and some touristic train stop there, from time to time, not very often…
But more than that, this is the place, near the Lake of  the Nations, where most of the people start their walking, bicycling or skating tours around the lake… also, the place where you can find some very “gourmet” food…
And of course, DAnu, the “caricaturiste en Estrie”… A real treat…
Here are some portraits, sketches and photos I did yesterday…

Some more portraits

Since it seems that you, my friends, did like my “public amuser” portraits, here are some more…

As I said somewhere I wish I could do this 3-4 times a week, summer AND winter (and spring AND autumn)… All my problems would be eased up if not solved… But then one have to accept gladly what fate offers to him/her…

I hope you’ll not consider me conceited if I say I KNOW I have a drawing talent… something not everyone has, something maybe unique. I wish I could do just that, using, developing this skill, this talent.

I could draw comic books – good ones, artistic ones, full of color and dynamism (I dream about a Draculya comics, a story about the true – well, as true as it can be – Vlad the Impeller…) but one has to eat too, hasn’t one? Oh, well…

Public amuser

You can see them in the public places of about every major city in Europe and North America… they draw your portrait, in pastel, pencil, watercolor etc. for a (usually) modest sum. They do it in 15 to 60 minutes (no less and no more). They are talented artists or less talented (but at least dexterous with their tools, for daily practice do that to you…) and even big names did it, at a time or another: Modigliani, Picasso, Iser…

Personally, I’ve seen them (in my experience 90-95 % are men, so I do not do the he/she thing…) in cities like Munich, Paris, Avignon, Sofia, Vienna, Edinburgh, Montreal, Quebec (Quebec)… and well, there is one at least even in my residence town of Sherbrooke, Quebec (I hesitate to cite my friend Clement among the public amusers – portraitist and cartoonist – since he is not charging anything for his work; I suppose that makes him a diletante...)

The one from Sherbrooke is a very good, talented one and he does not charge a lot… Your very very modest servant, whom (I love “whom”!) writes this very post…

Yesterday, I had the chance to exercise my tremendous drawing talent, for a modest sum, in a public park were we had a fête familiale (I don’t know the exact translation of that… kind of a barbecue or picnic of the neighborhood)… In about 4 hours, I draw 16 portraits, about a third of which aren’t that bad… I intercalate some in between the text… and hope you’ll enjoy some of it…

Caricatures and sad thoughts

I’ll try to amuse you with 2 of my “caricatures” (one representing a quebec liberated woman with her progeny and the other my daughter’s tomcat, Pitzu) since I’m bloody sad… My middle son broke his leg on the ice, a few days ago and, cherry on the cake, it is possible I loose my teaching job next year. So, that’s about all I can muster today…

Bad / Méchant / Rautacios

Modern womanIt doesn happen too often but it does: sometimes I’m bad. I hope no nice woman will tag me as a male chauvinist pig for this 2001 cartoon/drawing. My inspiration came from real life, that’s my excuse…and I was bad with the cat and with the kid too…  Ion Vincent Danu
