The Advantages of Living in a Very Old City

One of the main advantages, the one I’ll illustrate for you: there are a lot of festivals, events, exhibition and you can imagine yourself living in more than one epoch…

These are photos I took the last 4-5 days at the Medieval Festival. Very easy to imagine oneself living in that epoch in a city like Sibiu (Hermannstdt). Downtown, everywhere you turn old houses and chrches and fortifications reminds you of the time of Draculya, Vlad the Impaler…

…and some very old and particular skills: hawk and owl tamming…

Eventually, if you are lucky, you can catch some pretty funny characters, like this swarthy guy, trying to improve his looks wearing a helmet…

Or some bored medieval dressed vendors, tired at the end of the 3rd day of Festivities…

So, one did not get easily bored in Sibiu…lots of things to see and experience…You should try it (and No, the tourist board doesn’t pay me nothing; but this is my native town and I’m surely proud of it).

Self-portait, Why Do We Do it? (II)

One thing for sure, we rarely do it (if I am to judge by myself) because we are happy. Most of my self portraits are pretty somber or even, let’s say it, crazy. Mad as a matter, one time or another. Some sample from my depression time (about 2000-2003):

Pretty severe, eh? and another one, even more sumber, dark and gloomy…

I also did some a bit more funnier, like this parody of a Zen Buddhist Monk:

To illustrate my point with famous sample, here it is the celebrissime “Self-Portrait With a cut Ear” by my beloved Vincent. Not a very happy moment when he painted it, eh? (I don’t want to appear more Canadian than I really am but the “eh?” comes handy most of the time…)

The reproduction is pretty lame...

Finally, without any other sample but Vincent and I (one has to be faithfull to his own blog, has he?) I will post a pretty embarassing photo (at least for a long time; now I consider it simply history; the history of my depression). In fact, it’s a scan not a photo. I did an experiment (better than the drunk classic of people sitting naked on the Xerox machine…) on myself and put my own head – with the eyes open, crazy bastard! – inisde my scanner. Like a lion tamer, trying to deal with the depression-tiger… It didn’t devored my head, I think…

Funny in the scary way, isn’t it? I could start a new art School trend: The Scanned Portrait & Self-Portrait as a Revealing Your True Identity Method… I’m pretty sure there are enough lunatics (of both sexes) around to make it work… But I don’t have the energy…

That’s all for now.

And DON’t put my scan-photo on Facebook, please! (Shall I remind you, folks, that all text and almost all photos on this blog – and post – are copyrighted to me?)

Getting it, in an odd way…

Life is kind of funny. Well, funny, as when you speak about a mad person in order not to hurt the feelings of friends & relatives…

I will start painting and drawing again (almost for sure) because my mother (87) got sick and her and my 84 old father need my help and assistance. So, I am now in my old country, in my old native town Sibiu (Transylvania) and since I am needed to stay here almost permanently and, from time to time, I even have some spare time I will start to draw and paint again… Life is funny that way… You can find good things in bad ones and bad things in good ones. Reality never seems to be pure, bad or good in only one way. Mixt up, fluid, always changing…Funny…

For the moment, I’m just preparing my things. Bought some watercolor paper, washed my old brushes, established the spot where I will create my future masterpieces in my parents kitchen… Never touched a paper or canvas in the last…oh, must be, maybe, 9-10 months now. Like with a baby, I feel that delivery is at hand…

Of course, there are some inconvenients: to stay here in Romania beyond my legal measly 1 week paid vacation and 1 months of unpaid vacation, I will loose my credit, my car, my job (I am sure some clients of Chatr will regret my bariton, kind voice…) and I will badly miss my grandchildren, children and wife but, well, I will take care as much as possible of my old parents and, yes, I will paint again. Je ne regrette rien, as used to say Edith Piaf…

Even bad things happen for a good reason…
