Van Gogh and I

When I remember that time it’s kind of blurry… A lot of new pain, the self realisation that I’m going to be soon old and sick (just discovered I had the diabethes) and very probably neither rich nor famous, the growing up of the children, teenagers now, each of them with his own life and problems, a physical job which payed some bills but gave me no satisfaction… In a word: mid-life crysis. So called mid-life because I knew it then and I know it even more clearly now, I was way over the middle of my life, 3/4 gone or more… When you are 25-30 you don’t think a lot of death and old age and misery. But when you are 45-50, well, it begins to enter your skull the fact that you are far from being immortal. That, in fact, nobody is immortal, not even your children… Everyone…

The things I do right now

blue white nude

I almost finish it – or maybe is it over? I try to obtain some colors and color relations that are not the most usual, mundane, ones…

Et ovum

Entitled ET ovum, it’s an exercise in texture and green violet harmony… also a small experiment in superrealism and in composition… I kind of like it…

iridiscent fish

… An even smaller experiment in texture and iridiscent white… I don’t know why and how but fish, serpents and all kind of other weird animals get out of me regularly… The connexion with Vincent? None. It seems that I am my own man. But, somehow, he IS in my thoughts, in the background…

But then let me loose in the south of France and you’ll see…

Finally (I have 2-3 paintings I’m still working at… but let’s say, finally…) another nude, another exercice (Vincent usually said «des études» = studies… ) in texture, composition and, of course, color…

light blue background nude

If something catches your eye and you want to buy – it would be a first!  – just write me an email and I will give you all the details… I’m not cheap… but not very expensive either… Not yet…

2006 Nudes: Anna

It could seem, since I call them by their first name, that I know quite well my models… Not true. I call them by their first name in the north american style, where, without a real aquintance, we all call ourselves by the first name… The young guy who changes my tires call me, eventually, dan… doesn’t mean he really knows me. Or that he cares…

I wish, no doubt (and my work would improve ), to have more profound and lasting relationship with “my” models… but, first, they are not “mine” (being a public and collective nude drawing session) and, second, I do not have the time, the money and the courage to have my own, private, models, like Renoir and Matisse. Even if I am almost as harmless as they were…in their old age.

So, I only do the decent thing to ask their name and to name my paintings after… This is Anna, a beautiful young woman of light brown skin, as smooth (the skin) as a seal and reflecting the light in a very subtle way. I hope I’ve caught some of it…

The technique is acrylic ink and watercolor on Strathmore cold pressed paper.

Marie Soleil and some more watercolor pencils…

Since it seems not a bad pattern, I alternate my chronological works presentation with what I do in the present… So, I bookmark 2006 “eating people” and show you some nude drawings of Marie Soleil, one of our new models…

She’s nice, great body, nice posing, blue eyes, auburn hair (including the pubian! real auburn!)… The only shadow: because of the light (or for some other reason) she is frowning… Which, I think, gives her a charm, something special and different… The drawings I made initially – about 10 days ago – were, of course, a bit more “worked out” (“travailles” in French)afterwards and I was trying to take advantage of the smooth, deep, dark black green of the Ivory Black Dervent watercolor pencil… I really like them: easy to work with, with very deep tones of black and still the posiblity of light, delicate shadowing (as in the back viewed nude I post here). A technique to perfectionate, again and again…

There is also, in these drawings, a certain candor I cannot define, something naive but interesting…

It happens again…

No, it’s not the scary thing from David Lynch‘s movie (“Fire Walk With Me” – I never understood where…) but something more simple and less scary-eerie: the new season of drawing nudes…

Today it was Marie Lise, a nice young lady (who lost a few pounds – not bad) with a long neck, long waist and (a little too) short legs… Nice, expressive mud: dark eyes, well established brows and a small, upward nose (I’m not sure it’s the right word: in French we say “retrousse”…)

And I’ve tried new tools: I let go, for a while, pen and ink and took watercolor pencils (Derwent), mostly black (but it’s a black with blue streak, like the Payne’s Grey). Here are 3 of the results…not so bad for a first trial…

For this last one I have to apologize (even if it wasn’t my fault: it was the luck of the draw…) because Marie Lise did kind of show me her behind…and I draw it (hopefully, nothing offensive for sensible persons of both sexes…)

Blown in the wind…

The year is still 2005, a good year, a rich year (not in money-rich, of course…) I’ve drawn and paint a lot, portraits, nudes, landscapes, bizarro-baroques…

So many of them are now blown in the wind: given, bought for peanuts, lost… Happily, there are computers and digital photography and scanners… So, there is still my digital portfolio. One day, maybe, I (or someone else) will make an album with my best images. I guess it’s ok to call them images more than paintings or drawings since, for me, 95-96 % are just pixels on a hard drive or a disk… flickering images, as futile and fragile as old photographs or movies… A modest contribution to the beauty of this world, the result of my efforts to feint eternity, to leave something to my children and maybe not only…

I choose these two paintings for their use of reds and oranges, colors I love. Colors difficult de paint with, difficult to harmonize… Special. I hope you’ll like them…

Nudes 2005

Back to 2005’s portfolio…

That means also back to nudes, since 2005 was a very rich year in nudes. I’ve painted and draw them (probably I should say “it” but I love and respect them too much…) in charcoal and watercolor, in ink and acrylics…

Here are some samples…

…and another…

…and another charcoal one (technique I rarely use – it’s messy and my studio is a very little and cluttered… it’s not charcoal dust that I need; but still, I show you this in order to prove that I still know how to use it…)
